Origin
This meme originated from the horror manga The Enigma of Amigara Fault by Junji Ito. The plot follows an earthquake which reveals several human-shaped holes on the side of a fault. As people travel to see the spectacle, they realize that the holes were specifically made for individual people. They then become hypnotized into going through their holes, emerging months later on the other side of the mountain, hideously deformed.
Popularity
The manga, was popular on 4chan's /x/ (supernatural and paranormal) board for the hilarity of the various awkwardly translated quotes, such as:
"It's slowly coming this way!"
"Drr…Drr…Drr."
"This hole was made for me!"
A Facebook page (now defunct) was made for the "DRR DRR DRR" phrase use in the comic.
The comic was written in 2002, though popularity did not grow significantly until mid-2006. The jump in late 2007 is likely due to the repost of the comic on the Brasscockroach site for 2007's Halloween.
