About

The King of R&B refers to a video by artist Jacquees in which he declares himself "The King of R&B." The claim was mocked by other R&B artists and the video was parodied by Black Twitter users.

Origin

On December 8th, 2018, artist Jacquees posted a video in which he declared himself the current "King of R&B" (shown below).

Spread

The video was reposted to Twitter by @MyMixtapez on December 9th, 2018.[1] Rappers Trey Songz and TyDollaSign both tweeted laughing emoji about the claim.[2] Other Twitter users challenged the claim by pointing to humorous characters from pop culture, claiming they were the real "kings of R&B." For example, Twitter user @kamclark posted a video from Maury, gaining over 14,000 retweets and 29,000 likes (shown below, top). User @TheBlack tweeted a clip from Coming to America that gained over 9,500 retweets and 22,000 likes (shown below, bottom). The jokes were listed as one of the top memes of 2018 by Verge writer Micah Singleton.[3]
