TikTok Car Crash refers to a viral TikTok video uploaded by teenager Katie Cornetti immediately after her car flipped over in Pittsburgh. After the video was reposted to Twitter in November 2019, many commented on the teens obsession with TikTok.

Origin

On November 16th, TikToker @katie.cornetti uploaded a video of herself and two friends in a flipped over car using the sound clip Ashnikkos – Stupid. The video gained over 287,100 likes and 7,200 shares in three weeks (shown below).

Spread

On November 17th, 2019, @kati.cornetti uploaded another TikTok video in which she and her friend reenact the car crash (shown below, left). The video received over 7,300 likes in three weeks. Twitter user @zane[2] posted the video to Twitter with the caption "These girls got into an accident, flipped their car, and still managed to get a TikTok up" which garnered over 139,000 likes and 13,900 shares in two weeks. Due to the video's popularity, @katie.cornetti posted a TikTok "story time" video in which she explains that no one was on their phone during or before the crash (shown below, right). The video gained 1,600 likes in a week.

On November 20th, Katie Cornetti began responding to comments on @zane's repost. Twitter user @blurrysire[4] said "gotta respec their dedication" to which Cornetti responded "thank you" (shown below, left). The next day @emiilyyboo[3] reposted the video with the caption "social media is toxic" (shown below, right). On December 3rd, Buzzfeed[1] published an interview with Cornetti saying "That was the first thing that came to mind…to do that […] It really was scary…But we decided let’s do this to get our minds off of it, and honestly it helped a lot."
