Tommy Gets Whacked refers to a scene from the 1990 film Goodfellas. The scene is often used as a reaction image online in response to someone making a huge mistake, completely unaware of the impending consequences.
Origin
The scene comes from the 1990 film Goodfellas.[1] In the scene, Tommy DeVito is driven to a house expecting to become a "made man." However, instead of finding a party waiting for him, there is only an empty room. Tommy barely realizes what's about to happen before he's executed on the spot.
Spread
The majority of the scene's use can be found on Twitter as early as 2019. On June 30th, 2019, Twitter user Josiah Johnson posted the scene with the caption "How Iggy walked into Bob Myers office before the Warriors traded him to the Grizzlies".[2] The tweet (shown below, left) received over 1,600 likes and over 554 retweets in over three years. On January 3rd, 2021, Twitter user LeBatardShow posted the scene with the caption "The New York Giants getting ready for the Playoffs tonight:".[3] The tweet (shown below, right) received over 2,900 likes and over 370 retweets in over two years.
On December 18th, 2021, Twitter user Brandon Streussnig posted the scene with the caption "Disney opening Nightmare Alley next to Spider-Man".[4] The tweet (shown below, left) received over 9,800 likes and over 890 retweets. On August 31st, 2022, Twitter user ThatGuy3002 posted the scene with the caption "Leonardo DiCaprio's girlfriend coming to his house for her 25th Birthday party.". While the original tweet is inaccessible, it was reposted to Imgur by janetmartinez877 on September 1st, 2022, where it received over 150,000 views in over seven months.[5]
On January 5th, 2023, United States House Representative Ilhan Omar posted the scene to Twitter with the caption "Kevin McCarthy walking into the new Congress with a fresh majority".[6] The tweet (shown below, left) received over 36,000 likes and over 3,200 retweets in over three months. On March 10th, 2023, Twitter artist Beetlemoses posted a redraw of the scene, but with a different ending.[7] The art post (shown below, right) received over 15,000 likes and over 1,000 retweets in over one month.
