About

Toyota – Let's Go Places is a marketing tagline created by the Toyota Motor Corporation, replacing the previous "Moving Forward" tagline. Online, it has become the subject of humorous videos showing Toyota cars malfunctioning in various ways, similar to Das Auto parodies.

Origin

Toyota announced the tagline on September 11th, 2012,[1] writing:

“Let’s Go Places” evokes the forward-looking and optimistic momentum of Toyota in America. It invites consumers on a journey to see new places, discover new possibilities and dream big dreams together with Toyota.

Spread

Though the slogan had existed for several years, it didn't begin appearing in memes until the latter half of the 2010s. On March 26th, 2017, a YouTube user named Ekan uploaded a video of an edited version of the "Let's Go Places" commercial featuring a gas cylinder truck exploding in Russia. The video gained over 600,000 views in five years (shown below, left). On April 7th, 2019, a YouTube user named xAstro uploaded a video using the tagline and added a clip of a car accident after it. The video gained over 1 million views in three years (shown below, right)..

The popularity of the "Let's Go Places" tagline increased in 2021 when more YouTube users uploaded their own versions of the meme. On July 3rd, 2021, user King Kimi uploaded a video that gained over 10,000 views in less than one year (shown below, left). Around the same time, user 27dde posted an example that gained 2,600 views in less than one year (shown below, right).
