Origin

In Season 1 Episode 4 of Steven Universe, the protagonist Steven attempts to talk the character Garnet into eating breakfast with him by making a joke about his stack of pancakes being "balanced." After delivering the pun, Steven is shown wearing an uncomfortable facial expression (shown below).

Spread

On November 19th, 2013, several stills from the scene were posted by Tumblr user fiopiccolo,^[3] including the "Uncomfortable Steven" image (shown below). Within two years, the post gained over 800 notes.

On February 13th, 2014, DeviantArtist challock uploaded the reaction image with the caption "The face you make when your friends say they hate Steven Universe" (shown below).

On March 29th, 2015, the Uncomfortable Steven^[2] Tumblr blog was launched.
On the following day, the reaction image was added to the Steven Universe page on TV Tropes.^[8] On April 17th, Etsy^[9] user insomniacbuttons listed a button with the image for sale (shown below).
