Dad Bods Are the Top Male Physique refers to a December 2024 discourse surrounding the misuse of the term "dad bod" to refer to muscular bodies with average fat percentage. The viral debate, spawned by a viral X post, also inspired parodies in which users deliberately referred to fit and athletic people as having a "dad bod" or a "mom bod" to ridicule the original post.
Origin
A "dad bod" is a term used to refer to a male body type characteristic of a man above 40 years old, and is defined by having developed muscle mass but having a protruding stomach (example shown below).
On December 16th, 2024, X[1] user @lolitadiariess posted a photograph of a very muscular man with average body fat, commenting, "Dad bods are the top male physique," misusing the term. The post (shown below) gained over 57 million views, 9,900 reposts and 51,000 likes in two days.

The use of the term "dad bod" in the post to refer to a muscular body type without a protruding stomach, as well as in some earlier posts shared on X[2] / Twitter in previous years, sparked a discourse about the misuse of the term.
On December 17th, 2024, X[3] user @lxthrdg quoted the post, writing, "‘dad bod’ and it’s literally years of working out? sure." The post garnered over 1,200 reposts and 52,000 likes in one day. Later on the same day, X[4] user @Menkvi wrote that posts like these were a female equivalent to men mistaking natural makeup for having no makeup. Their post (shown below) gained over 5,900 reposts and 140,000 likes in one day.
Starting on December 17th, the caption "Dad bods are the top male physique" became a subject of parodies, as users deliberately applied it, as well as the analogous "mom bod" slang term, to pictures of athletic and muscular people.
For example, on December 17th, 2024, X[5] user @Ryan_Gasoline posted a photograph of actress Sofia Vergara with the caption, "I like a classic mom bod, I actually find this attractive." The post (shown below) gained over 1,200 reposts and 64,000 likes in one day.
