About
*There Is A Threat On Earth* Steven Universe: refers to an exploitable template that compares Steven Universe to a substitutable character who's portrayed as more composed than Steven when the Earth is threatened by a catastrophe. A crying Steven is portrayed, frazzled and rambling a wall of emotional text shown on the template's left side. The template was remixed across meme platforms going into 2023. The first known meme to use the template was posted to iFunny in 2021.
Origin
On July 15th, 2021, iFunnyer[1] @Ayoz posted a meme with top text that posed the situation, "*there is a threat on earth*" and contrasted the imagined responses of Steven Universe and Kratos from God of War. Steven was portrayed as emotional, crying while spouting a wall of text, while Kratos' response was portrayed with the PlayStation's circle button (O). Over the course of two years, the meme received roughly 12,600 smiles (shown below).
Spread
Months later in early 2022, the Kratos meme was then shared on other platforms. For instance, Instagram[2] user @kirby.the.star.warrior.blizzy shared the meme on March 19th, 2022, earning roughly 2,200 likes in 11 months. On March 21st, 2022, the Kratos meme was shared by Instagram[3] user @needless.mp4, earning roughly 13,200 likes in 11 months.
Going into 2022, the template was exploited on Instagram. For instance, on March 24th, 2022, Instagram[4] user @cryanideqween posted the first known variation of the template that referenced the creepypasta Mereana Mordegard Glesgorv, earning six likes in 11 months (shown below, left). More viral iterations then surfaced, like one uploaded by Instagram[5] user @owen_kung on April 4th, 2022, that referenced Luffy from One Piece, earning roughly 11,400 likes in 10 months (shown below, right).
The template's usage spread to Twitter when Twitter[6] user @bigwanger12 posted an iteration about Muscle Man from Regular Show, earning over 7,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). Video iterations soon surfaced on iFunny, the first known being an Angry Birds meme posted by iFunnyer[7] @KaiserXeno on June 30th, 2022, earning four smiles in eight months (shown below, right).
Video iterations continued to surface on iFunny[8] going into January 2023. Usage of the template continued on Reddit's /r/OkBuddyRetard [8] subreddit and Instagram[9] in early 2023 as well.
