Whisper, sometimes known as Whisper the Zombie, is a character that appears on the TikTok page @spookersnz and is depicted as a zombie with gray or white skin, fangs and long black hair who talks in an indecipherable language of growls and clicks. Despite their scary appearance, Whisper is characterized as wholesome and friendly. Whisper first became popularized in late 2022 and became increasingly viral throughout early 2023 as more people began claiming that Whisper is their comfort creature. Whisper notably has a teddy bear named Willow that they call their comfort creature.

Origin

Whisper first went viral in a video by TikToker^[1] @spookersnz (a promotional page for Spookers Haunted Attraction Scream Park in New Zealand) on October 6th, 2022. In the clip, it approaches someone and hands them a note complimenting their eyes, garnering over 3.8 million views in six months (shown below). The character was unnamed at the time.

Another video of Whisper was posted to TikTok^[2] on October 7th, garnering over 7 million views in four months. On October 19th, a video featuring Whisper that was captioned, "POV: shy zombie tucks you into bed," was uploaded to TikTok,^[3] garnering over 19 million views in six months (shown below, left). On November 26th, the TikToker^[4] uploaded a video revealing the character's official name, garnering over 720,000 views in five months (shown below, right).

Spread

Whisper continued to grow in prominence throughout early 2023, inspiring comments in which users call it "adorable" and claim that Whisper is their "comfort creature." On February 2nd, 2023, TikToker^[5] @spookersnz posted a video in which Whisper acknowledges the comments, introducing their comfort character (a teddy bear named Willow), garnering over 1.7 million views in two months (shown below).

Meeting With Jamie Campbell Bower

On March 26th, 2023, TikToker^[6][7] @spookersnz posted a video in which actor Jamie Campbell Bower, who has appeared in films and TV shows including Stranger Things, Twilight and Sweeney Todd, meets with Whisper and admits he's a fan of the creature, garnering over 12 million views in a week (shown below, left). They posted another video of the meetup on March 28th, garnering over 2.2 million views in six days (shown below, right).
