The Word Whammer is a fridge phonics toy manufactured by LeapFrog Enterprises in the early 2000's, based off the edutainment movie The Talking Words Factory. The toy has gained massive attention for the number of expletives one could spell using the device.
In December of 2003, an edutainment movie named The Talking Words Factory was released by LeapFrog, which was a sequel to The Letter Factory, released in June 2003. The movie features a gadget made by one of the characters, Professor Quigley, named the Word Whammer 3000, which has the ability to make three-letter words. The movie utilizes sticky red versions of the five vowels to differentiate them from the consonants. A little later, in 2004, a toy was made based off the machine. It featured 26 letter magnets, and 6 extra duplicate letters, which when inserted in one of the slots of the machine, sounds out the letters and says the word aloud. The machine is capable of making over 325+ words.
On February 24, 2007, a user by the name of Andrew Smith uploaded a video where he spells a few naughty words on the toy, including "WTF", and the infamous "gay". The video currently sits at 1 million views as of November 2019.
A decade later, on April 6, 2019, the user Jaxen Ross is b-a-c-k uploaded a video where he spells out bad words on the toy, and then destroys it on camera with a hammer. The video is his most popular on his channel so far, at 8 million views as of November 2019. In fact, the video was so popular that he made a sequel to it on November 1, 2019. In the video, he spells more bad words, and then burns the toy with fire.
Most videos about this toy, if they aren't reviews, have the user spelling out naughty words, which always includes the word "gay", which has now become a minor internet meme. The toy has also gained a cult following for the phrases "Let's learn letters!", which has had major quotability overtime.
