Game of Thrones haters, rejoice! David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the divisive Game of Thrones creators, have left their Star Wars trilogy, citing scheduling conflicts between Star Wars and their Netflix deal.
The pair were first announced to helm an upcoming trilogy of films in February 2018. Less than two years and one much-reviled final season of television later, their involvement is deader than Shmi Skywalker.
"We love Star Wars. When George Lucas built it, he built us too," they said in a statement. "Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away."
By the sounds of it, the $200 million Netflix delivered to Benioff and Weiss, presumably in a dump truck filled with cash, was getting in the way. This makes sense. $200 million to make whatever you want is obviously much more inviting than a series of Star Wars films people will find some reason to hate.
Unlike other former Star Wars helmers, Josh Trank and Colin Treverrow, who were likely ejected deep into the blackness of space by Mickey Mouse himself, it does seem like Benioff and Weiss left on positive terms.
At this point the modern Star Wars films have had more directors exit planned projects than make said planned projects.
Premature exits:
Trank
Trevorrow
Lord & Miller
Benioff & Weiss

"David Benioff and Dan Weiss are incredible storytellers," said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "We hope to include them in the journey forward when they are able to step away from their busy schedule to focus on Star Wars."
So like Skywalkers, it's possible that a Benioff and Weiss film could rise sometimes in the future. For the time being, detractors of the gruesome twosome--as they will now forever be known--are reveling in the news of their departure.
The schadenfreude about Benioff and Weiss exiting "Star Wars" is gonna last until tomorrow morning when "Todd Phillips' Ultra Serious Star Wars Trilogy" is formally announced. https://t.co/fn2OozOpDn

Why would Benioff and Weiss walk away from a learning opportunity like directing Star Wars?

Well, I guess I can announce the big news now: with Benioff and Weiss out, Disney has put me in charge of the new Star Wars trilogy. I got the job based on a three-word pitch: “Chewbacca wears jeans”

If only there was a filmmaker who could easily slot into Benioff and Weiss's Star Wars slot
Maybe a guy who's last Star Wars movie made 1.4 billion dollars, has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and who's next movie is currently sat at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes #StarWars pic.twitter.com/xyaidrTzea— Mike (@testtube27) October 29, 2019
