Grimace appears to be riding off into the sunset (or McDonald's is sealing him back into its vault) as the purple tastebud tweeted a signal that the Grimace's birthday promotion is coming to an end.
The tweet was widely interpreted as the final hurrah in McDonald's surprisingly viral "Grimace's Birthday" campaign, which largely centered around the much-memed Grimace Shake, a berry-flavored concoction that inspired a trend of gags that imagined it as some sort of eldritch horror.
As gags around the promotion recast Grimace as a quasi-Lovecraftian being in one of the biggest internet trends this year, jokes surrounding the conclusion of the Grimace Shake promotion followed suit.
While Grimace's birthday may be over in a technical sense, it appears that the Grimace Shake still has some life. McDonald's has been telling people that Grimace's birthday meal (which includes the purple shake) will still be available at participating locations "while supplies last."
