'I'm 17 And AFRAID Of Sabrina Carpenter' Kicks Off Doozy Of Discourse In Which Twitter Debates Whether It's Okay That Carpenter 'Dances Sexily'

Though many may lament that Twitter (now "X") isn't exactly what it used to be, occasionally a post will come along that makes people say, "I am never leaving this site."

Over the weekend, such a post was made by a purported teenager, who claimed they were 17 and "AFRAID" of pop singer Sabrina Carpenter because she dances too sexy.

The spicy sex-negative take comes from one @Popmvsics, who claimed to have amassed 20 million views on a thread starting with a clip of the "Espresso" singer bending seductively during one of her concerts.

Popmvsics claimed they were most upset on behalf of the minors in the crowd, apparently feeling sorry that people under 18 might suffer unknowable horrors upon seeing Carpenter bending over.

In a viral follow-up tweet, they wrote, "You guys are disgusting and weird for defending a literal weirdo. I'm 17 and AFRAID of Sabrina Carpenter when she's performing. You guys need help."

As has been proven time and again in recent weeks on Twitter, it's a good idea to investigate whether or not the day's main character is sincere or trolling with bait. In the case of this @Popmvsics tweet, it's safe to bet that it was bait.

For starters, they called it a joke tweet after it went viral. It's likely they mean that and are not just trying to walk back the take after it attracted negative attention. A quick perusal of @Popmvsics' account shows they are huge fans of other female pop stars, most notably Britney Spears, who quite famously danced sexually during her prime in the early 2000s.

One day after going viral, @Popmvsics then shared a montage of Spears that focuses on sexualized moments from her performances and music videos. It seems safe to assume they're not "afraid" of performers dancing sexually.

It seems more likely that @Popmvsics is a Sabrina Carpenter "Anti" ("Anti" is to "hater" what "Stan" is to "fan" in fandom culture), as their timeline oscillates between posts supporting Carpenter peers like Ariana Grande and Charli XCX and posts hating on Carpenter and Selena Gomez. Thus, it's safe to assume their "I'm 17 and AFRAID of Selena Carpenter" post was merely bait that worked to perfection.

While many Twitter users racked up retweets and likes dunking on @popmvsics because they thought the tweet was sincere, a few recognized the post's true intent and had to concede it was well-done bait.

After a day of heaving insults and going viral for criticizing Sabrina Carpenter, @popmvsics, whose profile states they're an "Anti-bullying advocate," tweeted, "Spread positivity."
