The mythical "Snyder Cut" of Justice League, a long-sought-after alternative cut of the superhero film which fans believe will be truer to the original filmmaker's intent, is finally seeing the light of day. The film will be released on HBO Max in 2021.

A brief refresher on the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign: Zack Snyder directed 2017's Justice League but left production in the editing phase due to personal issues. He was replaced with Joss Whedon, and fans noted the final product seemed to have many "Whedon-isms," particularly his sense of humor. Whedon also allegedly replaced the film's composer, Tom Holkenborg, with Tim Burton. The resulting final product disappointed fans, who launched a Change.org petition and a years-long hashtag campaign advocating for the release of Zack Snyder's version of the film, which they believed would be darker and more cinematic.

In the years following the film's release, the Snyder Cut was confirmed to exist, and eventually, stars of the film echoed the rallying cries of the grassroots campaign. Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Snyder, and Jason Momoa all have publicly called upon Warner Brothers to release the Snyder cut of the film.

Their cries were finally answered today after over two years of campaigning. Variety described the release of the film on HBO Max, a streaming service Warner Media hopes will compete with Netflix, as a no-brainer, saying a "global event IP like Justice League is invaluable subscriber bait for the platform, which launches May 27."
