'New Insecurity: Unlocked': TikTokers Shocked To Learn Starbucks Employees Listen To, Make Fun Of Orders

Did you know that Starbucks employees listen to your orders? Yup, that grande green tea latte with one-pump-classic, almond milk, six scoops of matcha, 195 degrees, with a half-inch of foam you shout into an intercom on the drive-thru feeds directly into headsets worn by the essential workers of Starbucks. Can you believe it? The very same baristas who take your order also require knowledge of its contents.

This might seem obvious, but it isn't. Plenty of people on TikTok, apparently, did not know that to make someone's coffee, a barista must know the order. What a country!

TikToker and Starbucks employee @zanderghura blew the lid off drive-thru surveillance and spilled the beans (all puns intended, of course) in a pair of viral videos from December 2020, which are making the rounds, once again. In the videos, @zanderghura explains that cameras provide a live-feed of the drive-thru lines for baristas and other Starbucks employees. Additionally, the ordering intercom feeds directly into the headsets of most of the store. This means that everyone's listening to your order and potentially making fun of it.

"As you can see, she's wearing one," @zanderghura says in the video.
"He's also wearing one. I'm wearing one. And the two people in the back are wearing one. That means we can all hear you while you order your drink in the drive-thru."

"Yes, we can all hear you," they write in the caption. "And yes we do sometimes make fun of your drink."

The pair of videos have, collectively, amassed nearly 3 million views. However, while this is good news for @zandergjura, commenters are less thrilled. With a mix of concern, embarrassment and insecurity, people responded to the video, shocked by the idea that someone inside Starbucks is making their orders and potentially finding a reason to criticize them. Can you imagine someone making fun of the Unicorn Frappuccino. Like, what would they even say?

Is this something that people have to worry about? Not really. Undoubtedly, many of these comments are being made in jest. Fast-food employees and baristas need space to blow-off a little steam, especially in a high-pressure world of coffee making, an incredibly stressful and challenging job. If they want to make fun of your fancy milkshake, let 'em! You're the one leaving with a fancy, caffeinated milkshake!
