Thomas belongs to a real class of locomotive, the E2, of which only 10 were built, for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR). Of those 10 only 5 had the extended side tanks like Thomas has (hence "the tank engine"). All were scrapped by 1963 with none surviving to preservation. It is not clear whether in canon Thomas is meant to be one of the 5 or an imagined 6th.
