Maybe its like X&Y, and the opposite gender PC has the starter with advantage?

Colloseum, XD, PBR, Stadium etc. all have battles conducted in stadiums/arenas for a sports-like feel.

I always found it weird that the Champion was just in a room on their own. There would surely be money in televising all the league matches, even in-universe.
