What the heck have humans in Steven Universe seen that makes them react nonchalantly to weird shit happening?

Connie’s mom didn’t notice a cluster gem monster with a bunch of arms, and now the people of Jersey are only mildly annoyed with blue people flying around on wings made of water. I don’t know why, but I get the feeling that most people are vaguely aware Gems exist because of past events, but don’t care enough to do anything about it.

Or maybe, they're really that apathetic toward things that are out of the ordinary, I don't know.
