Part of me feel's like it's less about Jasper being dense, and more Jasper being willing to say the truth.

"Gems don't just become new people. You can change your appearance, you can change your voice, you can even forget everything that you are. But you're still a gem, you're still Rose Quartz." Then we have Steven kind of freaking out as he starts questioning who/what he is, maybe the others quickly trying to reassure him how wrong she is.
