A message on a World War Two gun emplacement has set the fur flying in a Northumberland town.

The words “Come and See My Cat” have been written on the structure located on the coast near Berwick, a stone’s throw from the East Coast Main Line.

The slogan has been there up to a year and has intrigued social media users – including Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray – as to its meaning.

But it has also upset locals, including the woman on whose farm it sits, with one heritage champion calling it “sacrilege” and calls for it be turned into a heritage centre.

Hazel Simpson posted a picture of the message on Twitter and Flickr.

The Londoner explained: “I’m a semi-regular traveller on the East Coast line as my mum lives in Edinburgh. I saw it quite a while ago and it grabbed my attention because it’s such a quirky thing to graffiti. The location is intriguing – a lonely dilapidated building near the sea – and because I’d love to come see the writer’s cat.
