Despite how much I do like the design, the red, curly hair doesn’t really fit the aquatic theme of Team Aqua (ironically more befitting of Team Magma), while Shelly’s new look has long, flowing dark hair with a blue streak. Combined with what appears to be some kind of diving suit, the new Shelly is just more thematically appropriate for the team. Also helps her stick out better from the grunts. Again, I like both designs, new Shelly just seems to be more thematically fitting and striking compared to the old Shelly.
