Acronyms are pronounced the way that they sound like in the acronym without regard to what the letters represent. Sure it might mean more than my opinion, but the English language does not have official arbiters for pronunciation. Most words are pronounced differently now than they were when they were originally created, that's just the way it works. There are many examples of words with the same pronunciation but different meanings. In this case, the context makes it very clear which word one is saying. I've never heard Jif used outside of a specific discussion of peanut butter (or in the gif argument). It's not ripe for confusion. If anything, gift sounds very close to one pronunciation of gif, and is probably more likely to cause confusion. But not enough to be a valid argument. Argument 4- Look at the words giraffe, gin, and giant (or conversely, gift, gimp, and gig) Clearly neither of these arguments works because there are so many examples of words with a G followed by an I that are pronounced both ways that you can't really say there's a general rule. Linguistically, "gi" makes a soft G sound in words that derive from Latin or Greek. But it makes a hard G sound when it derives from German Because English is a mix of all of those (plus many other) influences, it creates the situation where both are common. Obviously GIF doesn't derive from any other language, so we can't use any linguistic rules The correct argument- either pronunciation is acceptable There are so many English words with multiple accepted pronunciations, like caramel, pajamas, aunt, route, envelope, address, and apricot.
