Western games are always set to one difficulty, being easy or hard, depending on the settings, but either way, there is an element of possibility, no matter how hard. Take the Veteran modes in most shooters, you only lose if you don’t take cover often and not take out an enemy before proceeding; avoiding those pitfalls makes it a cakewalk.
But Nintendo games? They’re deceptively easy to start off with, a mechanism for kids and adults to enjoy it, but once you reach secret levels or endgame areas, the difficulty skyrockets to those who have complete mastery. Super Mario Odyssey, the Dark Side of the Moon challenges are unforgiving! Pokemon games? You can beat the game spamming the same move, but go to the Battle Tower and opponents use actual strategy and Legendaries! Legend of Zelda, hard for kids to master, but still easy enough to learn, but going to the end-game dungeon to fight hordes of enemies is brutal!
