I think 99/100 SU fans predicted that Yellow Diamond would have been the one to go toe to toe with the Crystal Gems. For Blue Diamond, all we'd seen until now was her being so depressed she could barely function, and even in the past she did little more than hand out orders from her palanquin. For her to throw down as this unstoppable Mad Titan came right out of left field. It was a clever way to subvert our expectations, and also showed why the mere mention of her name could paralyze Garnet herself with fear.
