I'm not sure if it really was all just a business stunt because I still remember how people assumed the same thing when Coca-Cola introduced New Coke in the 1980s. One of Coke's higher ups responded to the "conspiracy" by saying "we're neither stupid enough or smart enough to have planned this as a way to increase sales."

No one was going to their stores for a reason, and people still won't go to their stores now for the same reason: Amazon is Toys R Us but cheaper and more convenient.
