Are you familiar with the term 'sour grapes'? Once you realize you can't have something, the only option is to convince yourself that the thing you can't have is somehow undesirable. No, obviously getting all your wishes granted WOULDN'T randomly suck in some arbitrary manner; but the only person the author is usually trying to convince is himself.

Everybody eventually decides that all the things they used to want were stupid; because the alternative is being forever miserable that they didn't get them. The fifty thousand stories on the subject are just people hoping that if the lie gets more elaborate, it will be more convincing.
