After the April 18, 2013, bombing of the Boston Marathon, law enforcement agencies scrambling to locate the perpetrators of the crime. People on Reddit and Twitter started sharing r posted side-by-side photos of an actual FBI bombing suspect and a college student named Sunil Tripathi, who had gone missing about a month before the marathon inci- information too. One Reddit user dent. Sunil's family had a Facebook page dedicated to locating their missing son; his family had been working with the FBI to find him and bring him home safely. Tripathi had nothing to do with the bombings, but that didn't stop the Reddit user posting The side-by-side photos were "accompanied by speculation about the circumstances surround ing Sunil's disappearance and the FBI's involvement in his search. By 8:00 p.m., three hours after the FBI released the suspects' photos, angry messages began to appear on the Tripathis' Facebook се page. Tweets by journalists, some with thousands of followers, only fueled the misinformation about Tripathi. For example, Andrew Kaczynski of BuzzFeed sent out the "misinformation to his 81,000 followers" and then "quickly followed up with: 'Wow Reddit was right about the missing Brown student. But was the speculation about Tripathi driven by critical thinking? No. It was driven by assumptions, hastiness, and foolishness.
