Shantae continues to be a real indie success story. From the last game needing to be Kickstarted to be funded (and still being a successful Kickstarter in spite of launching the campaign maybe a little too close to Mighty No. 9, a game that got way more attention back in 2013 because no one could have predicted what would become of MN9 and Mega Man in the following years) to the next one having a publisher and funding from the get-go, with a budget big enough to hire Studio Trigger to do animated cutscenes. It's almost hard to believe at one point Shantae was a series that almost seemed dead on arrival because the original game came out on the Game Boy Color during a point in time no one was buying new GBC games (it came out in 2002, the GBA was already out by then), and it took years to get just one sequel out.
