H IAMA DRUNK_BEAR smug statist generally ashamed of existing on the internet 1067 points 6 days ago I'm saying that what she's doing right now is, basically, diplomacy. And you don't do diplomacy buy offending people. All that does is make people less likely to even listen to you in the future. There's a difference between bringing a lot of attention to an issue and shaming people into action, and actually offending them. I've brought it up 18 million times on this website but this view is one of the most rampant fundamental misunderstanding of how actual affecting cultural and social change works it just rankles me to no end. Popular movements and sentiment respectively have never been and will never be mobilized and altered one way or another by some calm back and forth of reasonable "debate" and "dialogue". To put it simply, the entire point of raising awareness towards a cause is not only to get people's attention, but also to make them very uncomfortable and upset enough to do something about it. The very act of making people upset and uncomfortable also makes them upset and uncomfortable at the actual act itself (and thus by extension the person doing the act; literally every figurehead from Nelson Mandela to Martin Luther King Jr. to Mahatma Gandhi were very very unpopular at the time!), but if you're effective eventually you're able to agitate people into either actually acknowledging your point if not agreeing and flocking to your banner, or as more often than not simply deciding that it's worth placating you simply to make you go away (or, as also more often than not, silencing you permanently) What's worse is I don't even have a particularly strong opinion about the actual random Swedish teenager that likes sail boating, but know your political history people! permalink embed save report give award reply
