More like loyalty and morale. I'm not well versed in combat tactics nor served, but I'm under the impression that militia are just a bit more reliable than unpaid mercs, compared to sworn, drilled, rank-and-file soldiers.

So, could it be that they would just run/desert because they got no stakes in this battle anymore, but circumstances allowed them to literally walk away at a leisurely pace instead?

After the annexation of Libya, the Italian Navy (Regia Marina) started aiming for the annexation of other Turkish colonies in the Mediterranean.

In particular former Greek islands that got occupied during the Ottoman conquest, centuries earlier.
The most important of these islands, is Rhodes, which is right at Turkey's doorsteps.
Despite the Turks gathered up a militia of 10 thousands, they gave up the fighting soon as the main garrison surrendered.

The Italians conquered the island quickly and easily, supported by artillery fire from the sea and chased down the retreating Turkish forces through the island until they gave up their weapons and surrendered.

In the meme, the ship in the background is a 3D reconstructed model of the Ammiraglio di Saint Bon, which assisted the Italian troops with his sister ship, the Emanuele Filiberto.

The meme, which took me a while to draw and color properly, is a quite slightly less dignifying version of the image that Il Corriere Della Sera drew to print the news of the Turkish forces surrendering.

The print shows the Turk commander giving out his sword and a giant line of his soldiers ready to do the same.
On the other side, there are Italian forces, who seem to be with some captured and wounded Turkish soldiers wearing a blue uniform. Perhaps those were the militiamen

Overall, it was a pretty embarrassing defeat. The Italian forces managed to cause 20 times more death casualties to the Ottomans than they had, and captured a very high number of soldiers.

Turkey losing Rhodes, could be comparable to Italy losing Sicily, and these consecutive losses from the Turks led to the general uprising against them in the Balkans
