It's because most of the dead people were at sea and at night time. Between the missing ones, the ones who sunk with the ship and the bodies that were never found, it is estimated that there were about 300 confirmed casualties, possibly even more.
However it was confirmed, that the Admiral of the fleet died in this raid.

You might be surprised by how many battles have "Unknown" in that section because one side couldn't confirm or report the exact number of casualties
