The First Battle of Monte Grappa was what halted the Austro-Hungarian army from taking over Northern Italy after their victory at Caporetto. That failure Cadorna was taken off the command, and substituted with Diaz, which is probably the smartest move that they could have done. While it was Diaz in charge of the defense, it was that guy with the beard, Mario Nicolis commanding the troops on the ground. Luckily, the ONE thing Cadorna had done right the entire war was fortifying the mountains. It's like he could see his future failures and prepared in advance. I took a page from a user named "ThiccLoli" and Wojaked Otto von Below's face. I also added color to his black and white photograph, which is apparently something no one else bothered to do lol Unlike Conrad, that German general had a pretty good reputation. But despite having special troops and numerical superiority, they lost. Just think about it, if Diaz and his subordinates had messed up this battle, now Venice probably wouldn't be an Italian city.

This is a somewhat obscure war, mostly because people remember the first (way less bloody) one in which the Ethiopians won. This time it was a full blown war, not just a garrison, and the Ethiopian emperor ordered every capable of fighting man to go and fight a war that they couldn't possibly win. And by "every fighting capable man" it means literally everyone. Only very old people, children, pregnant women and disabled were saved from being drafted. They were forced to fight by any means necessary. The result is that absurd number of dead Ethiopians... The Italian rule didn't last long at all, and part of the colonization effort was lost due to the fact that WW2 started and Ethiopia fell into British hands afterwards Alongside the Italians, there were high numbers of Somali veterans and Eritrean troops helping. The Ethiopians were left alone on the field, but Nazi Germany supplied them with weapons
