Anonymous 01/20/20(Mon)10:41:08 No.70561340 >>70561357 >>70561384 >>70561413 >>70561562 >>70561572 >>70561665 >>70562737 >>70563269 >>70565260 Dangeons & Dragons GREYHAWR What is the difference between Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk? And I em not asking about the lore or geography, but specifically the themes and the niche. PAY KE CUIDE Mystara is the pulp Sword & Sorcery setting Dark Sun is the post-apocalyptic desert world Dragonlance is the High Fantasy, good vs evil kind of setting Planescape is the inter-planar weirdness setting Ravenloft is Gothic Horro Spelljammer is space fantasy Eberron is the pulp magitech setting But what is the distinction between Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms? They both seem like pretty basic low fantasy settings to me. What makes them thematically distinct from each other? O Anonymous 01/20/20(Mon)10:43:46 No.70561357 >>70561371 >>70561412 >>70561340 (OP) One is significantly better written than the other. Anonymous 01/20/20(Mon)10:47:34 No.70561371 >>70561399 >>70561357 that's not really a distinct niche tho * O Anonymous 01/20/20(Mon)11:46:54 No.70561704 - >>70561763 >>70561880 >>70561665 Both are Heroic Fantasy. The difference is in the details. Greyhawk is more low magic, black-and-white kinda setting, while FR is more morally grey high magic one. FR is arguably more detailed as a setting and it has its own unique twists that separate it from GH - like Eilistraee. As for why would you take one over the other - personal preference, really. >> O Anonymous 01/20/20(Mon)12:13:36 No.70561880 • 2>70562033 >>70561704 >Greyhawk is more low magic According to? It's really not low magic. * O Anonymous 01/20/20(Mon)12:39:06 No.70562033 >>70562119 >>70561880 The key point here is "more". It has its magical elements, but they are more toned down compared to FR, where magical wands can be bought in a shop and every peasant has some magical untensils. >> O Anonymous 01/20/20(Mon)20:27:19 No.70567562 ► File: maxresdefault.jpg (133 KB, 1280x720) >>70561340 (OP) Even though they dressed it up in the 90's Greyhawk lent itself to a 'blood & mud' mentality (Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser). Yes there was a LOT of magic items but the people who used them were implied to be few & far between. The populace was mostly neutral dirty peasants growing turnips and didn't give much of a s--- about anything beyond their borders. There were no 'adventurers' just mercenaries, tomb robbers, plunderers, cultists & questers. You had an evil & extremely decadent Roman Empire, a city state of Devil worshippers, a nation of a---- martial artists, the most powerful wizards of the planet were an Illuminati that observed more than it acted and then you an actual Demigod who couldn't be sent back to his home plane because this WAS his home plane. Also, all the classic 1st edition modules were Greyhawk. Forgotten Realms was clean, pretty, every tavern was owned by a retired 8th level fighter who kept his +2 short sword under the bar, there was a secret society of handsome & beautiful do-gooders and the most prominent wizard on the planet was a busybody who sent low levels on 'quests' he could have do himself, people actually CALLED themselves 'adventurers' and it was an occupation unto itself. Most of the populace was LG or NG, and middle class commoners outnumbered peasants. Also they had printing presses and apparently dentists since everybody smiles with a full set of pearly teeth. They are two flavors and it's up to you to decide which one you like.
