I'm sick and tired of idiots from elsewhere automatically assuming everything south of the Mason-Dixon line is racist.

I think the point of using the word is to drive home how lowborn he was. People considered him worse than NIGGERS. Think of all the nasty horrible things that word conjures up, then imagine somehow being lower on the totem pole.
