Now I can only imagine Achilles being swirled around on that thing, getting fried by the mystical properties and end up like a Fysh Styx.

From what I remember, the reason Achilles wasn't fully submerged was that because doing so would have killed him due to the properties of the Styx.
So partial invulnerability was basicallly the compromise.
