Because no one will hire them. Games journalists are the people who failed to become other kinds of journalists. That's also why so many of them hate video games so much.

Most of them probably worked on different mediums like books or TV, but those do not pay nearly as much as gaming nowadays, so they hopped in on the trend while being completely disconnected from it.
