Kind of – they did play around with the idea that Mario was flat, but didn’t directly theme it around paper. The bigger thing is that while it was included as an extension of “the world and characters are in a papery storybook style so what if we played around with the fact that he’s literally flat and can fold up”, the story, partners, environments, and abilities were their own thing, not all themed around papercraft.

The issue fans have isn’t about the existence paper gimmicks. The issue is that the only thing LEFT is paper gimmicks.
