I've always found Gamefreak's place in the world a slightly fascinating one. Back in the day it was unprecedented, but these days we can understand that what happened to Gamefreak is basically equivalent to an Indie Dev team being asked to make a game for Bethesda… that then goes on to somehow be the most popular game of all time.

What do you do after that? The success you've gained is far beyond your own resources and skill level; and you don't actually own your success at all. Your name is instantly bankable for everybody… except you. Anybody seeing anything from you in the future will accept the world even though it was never your own skill that made you popular in the first place, so a game that would earn you some acclaim as being a slow but steady improvement making realistic use of your skills in an alternate timeline earns you nothing but derision.

So you just kinda make sequels because people will keep paying you for them.

And it slowly sinks in that your publisher owns your soul.

And then people start yelling at you to quit, to stop working on the games because any other studio could do it so much better even though if it wasn't for you there'd be no games to have a studio in the first place. And this thing that has ruined your life is also the only thing you have left but everybody still insists that you don't deserve it. Not that you didn't deserve the tragedy, you don't deserve something so good.

Gamefreak has it hard, man.
