In a way, Frankenstein's Monster is a flesh golem. And I'd give it a plus that, depending on the variation, you can get a version that has actual character. Personally, I like the steam-punk cyborg one from Van Hellsing.

And if we're counting bastardized retellings as a negative, wouldn't it count against the Golem that they've pretty much been turned into a generic fantasy monster?
