I realize this is likely in jest (though I plead Poe's Law in any case) and that I'll just be playing Captain Killjoyâ„¢, but this is just what happens when you have over two decades of indoctrination convincing an entire generation that "caring about stuff is lame", preaching irreverence and nihilism like a religion. "Nothing is sacred, everything is ripe for mockery, absolutely nothing matters, etc."
When I look back at the political climate over the past few decades, I get the sense that we're going though a sort of cultural whiplash. I was young, but I remember that a lot of the media of the 1990's and 2000's revolved around an ethos of irreverence and nihilism. The big arguments on the internet in the 2000's weren't between nationalists and Marxists, they were between atheists and Christians.
Then in the 2010's, the youth started getting into some pretty extreme political ideologies. It turns out that you can only keep telling yourself everything is stupid and nothing matters for so long. Eventually, life catches up with you and you suffer a massive identity crisis. Religion and civic duty had basically been laughed out of the public consciousness, so now young people only had one thing to turn to as their new god: radical politics.
