It's kind of a shame JJ isn't really used like this much, especially more modern uses. Instead more comically unrepentant asshole, that's responsible for a lot of awful things that turns into a universal punching bag otherwise.

Probably why Raimi's version is so good. Not just because of Simmons, but also that he's not too overboard on being an asshole while still having little moments in the movies. Like not selling Peter out to the Goblin, or the brief moment of regret after MJ is kidnapped.

We've seen enough one dimensional JJJ, it's time to give him more depth.

I've seen on a tumblr post someone headcanon that he was the son of an abusive cop who grew up to be very critical of authority and always goes the extra mile to take them accountable for their actions.
And that the reason he gives so much shit to spider-man is because people overlook things that would otherwise get a cop fired or at least, have the taxpayer compensate the citizen for property damage. Does your insurance covers you if spider-man uses your car as a projectile? No, because he's nobody.
You can't call your local representative to have spider-man fired if he fucks up, he's a vigilante outside a system that held peacekeepers accountable, he's a menace!
