As somebody who hasn't been actually watching the series since 2010 or so, the world of Naruto seems like a terrible place to live. Ignoring the technology, the world is basically split between being ruled by feudal rulers and mercenary warlords. You had 3 "World Wars" in the span of a single lifetime, and casualties of these and other conflicts seem to be high, given how many child soldier orphans we have running around.
The Leaf Village recruits child soldiers under the age of 10, is full of bigots, has done its share of experiments on humans, has a powerful secret police force that answers only to a long-since appointed official, and is at least partially responsible for most of the major antagonists in the series… and somehow they're still the closest thing this setting has to good guys.
