In the final scene of the episode, after saying goodbye to Belinda and Poppy, the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) explosively regenerates into a form resembling his previous companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper).

The show's official X^[1] account posted a clip of the final scene that same day (seen below), captioning it, "Watch the moment we said goodbye to the Fifteenth Doctor and hello to…" The post amassed over 2.9 million views and 13,000 likes in two days.

Online Reactions

Debate quickly arose on social media after the Doctor Who series 15 finale aired in late May 2025 as the fandom began discussing the events of the episode, particularly Billie Piper's unexpected appearance and speculation that she could be the next Doctor.

For example, on May 31st, 2025, X^[2] user @spuffylovebot posted a two-comic panel using the Megan Interesting meme accompanied by pictures (old and new) of Piper's character (Rose) in the Doctor Who series. The tweet (seen below) amassed more than 175,000 views and 5,400 likes in two days.

Piper's appearance in the show's final episode also drew speculation that she might be the 16th Doctor in the next season. However, IGN^[3] and other news outlets reported that some fans don't believe she'll be the next Doctor as viral debates emerged online.

Later on May 31st, 2025, Redditor u/Free_Satisfaction368 uploaded a comment on the r/DoctorWhoNews^[6] subreddit related to Billie Piper as the 16th Doctor, writing that they "think this is a stunt to get more viewers watching the show." The post (seen below) received roughly 190 upvotes and 360 comments in two days.
