O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:42 No.12355244 you can remove dents and dings from a wood stock, so long as they dont cut the lignin, with a clothing iron. Cover the stock with a damp cotton shop towel ( damn they are useful) then place the hot iron on the towel over the dent, and use the steam feature. Dont hold the iron on for to long, keep it moving slowly (circles work well for me), dont use any pressure, and re wet the towel often. When you are done you will need to refinish the stock. I recommend tru-oil or boiled linseed. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:45 No.12355267 This is more for BABY'S FIRST PRECISION RIFLE but. Take a ballistic calculator and dial in EVERYTHING about your ammo and rifle and find out your adjustments from 0-1000m. Don't forget to adjust for temperature (MNfag so I have 4 ballistic averages for each season using the average temperatures I found at http://www.weather.com/weather/wxclimatology/monthly/graph/USMN0503 ) Take your rifle to the range during these seasons and see how the calculations hold up (i.e. your calculator says come up 2.5 MOA to adjust range from 500m to 600m but in fall you only need to come up 2 MOA because of variables). You can become more precise later and have a ballistics calculator with you but I just keyed this up on my computer, got averages and kept them around in case I ever need to shoot someone on my land at 700m regardless of winter. Don't forget, elevation and humidity changes things too so a 500m zero at sea-level Louisiana will be off if you roll out to Colorado and don't re-zero when you get there. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:48 No.12355303 If you get a flinch, there's two ways to break it, shoot babby guns, or my approach. Get a cheap NEF/H&R Pardner, a recoil pad of your choice, and the following shells. 2" minis, 2 3/4" BP shells, 2 3/4" trap loads (1100FPS, 1oz), 2 3/4" field loads, and a few 3" shells. Work through them, with the recoil pad you'll enjoy the recoil, and you'll have more fun than shooting several hundred .22s O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:49 No.12355306 When you buy a gun (new or used)...before you shoot it, CLEAN IT Thoroughly. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:49 No.12355308 As derp as it sounds, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars with a weather app, windfinder app, and a ballistics app for iphones and adroid phones. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:49 No.12355320 focus on your front sight, if the rear sight moves too far one way or the other you WILL know it and it allows you to keep focus past your weapon at your target O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:51 No.12355333 Taking a shot on your second exhale will give you a more steady shot than the first, third, etc exhale. It's how the body works when you are consciously breathing. O Papulu !dCodef2d72 08/02/12(Thu)02:51 No.12355336 Also No matter how smart you think it is. No matter how strapped for cash you are. No matter how easy it is. Don't use chainsaw bar lube for your guns. Its too runny and it gums up on carbon and dust like a m-----------. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:52 No.12355337 If you get a custom made weapon or one that has been worked on internally CHECK THE HEADSPACE BEFORE SHOOTING you never know what was done to it and it could end very badly. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:52 No.12355343 If you use bore snakes segregate the ones you use in guns that shoot corrosive ammunition, so you dont cross contaminate barrels. (I mark them by punching a C after the cal. on the brass weight) O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:53 No.12355352 Use ATF for a cheap lube. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:53 No.12355353 If you have a nice and comfortable shooting style, f--- what people say, enjoy it. I love to shoot sitting Indian style with my elbow on my knee to make due without a bench or other rest. Comfy and accurate, i can knock varmit out at 50 yards easy with .22 subs out of my old rusty Glenfield 20, or out to 100 with unjacketed .22 left over from my dad's youth. O pathsofglory !!LADET62C7H 08/02/12(Thu)02:53 No.12355355 12g bore snakes are a perfect fit to clean an AK's gas tube O Papulu !dCodef2d72 08/02/12(Thu)02:54 No.12355365 Tampons work as well. Seriously they work great for it. O meh 08/02/12(Thu)02:55 No.12355373 It would be nice if self defense situations could fit into a simple, neat equation but in the real world there are a lot of unknown variables. For example, there's a common and popular argument right now on what is the best caliber for defense, the two most popular being 9mm and 45acp. Remember that having a defensive weapon isn't so much about killing but rather about giving you an edge in a fight you were unprepared for and was at a major disadvantage. An attacker will often be prepared and have planned his attack, will have adrenaline influencing his reflexes and strength, if you're a male the attacker will probably not be alone and most of the time your attacker will probably be juiced on drugs. Given the unknown variables such as your attacker(s), clothing, preparedness, etc... caliber is actually very unimportant. Statistics have proven that 85% of the time defensive situation that reauire weapons to be drawn end in 5 shots or less with neither party being injured or killed. Science has also shown that with a motivated or possibly drugged attacker can continue charging and attacking up to 10-15 seconds after having their heart penetrated. This is plenty of time to close distance and get their hands on you. The most important part of choosing a weapon and caliber for defense is your own sense of security and confidence. I for example don't prefer weapons that are black because most defensive situations occur at night. When I draw my gun I don't want an attacker to confuse it for a cell phone or wallet. I want them to know that I am clearly drawing a gun and they need to turn and run the ofher way. I feel more secure in this and that's my choice. So don't listen to the arguments because ultimately it hardly matters if it's a 22 or a 50ae, what matters most is how confident you feel in dealing with the situation should it ever arise. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:57 No.12355395 Shooting paper is great, but stationary. Spend time shooting clays. It can improve your shouldering and target lead time as well as follow-up shot acquisition. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:58 No.12355406 Never miss the opportunity to take a kid shooting. O Anonymous 08/02/12(Thu)02:58 No.12355408 Don't look through a scope and find your target. Look at your target then align your scope so your crosshairs are on top. This way you are aligning your rifle simply and quickly on target. (Learned this from the Navy Seals Sniper handbook I think) Practice point shooting, no sights. This is easy for CQC and much faster. Especially helps in room clearing.
