A collapse that was mainly due to decades of under-funding of society for over-funding of the military, shattered due to a prestige loss from the disaster in Afghanistan, and the desertion of it's sphere of influence.

Gorbachev had to make a bunch more mistakes beyond Afghanistan for the Union to go down.
