Before Mario, there was Popeye…

The original arcade game that would become Donkey Kong was going to star Popeye and Bluto, but Nintendo was unable to attain the license. So, Shigeru Miyamoto came up with the characters Mario and Donkey Kong, and history was made!

So, Popeye played a really big part in Nintendo's history! He'd be worthy of an inclusion in Smash, but he'll probably never be in due to the fact that he isn't a video game character, and because the licensing for him would probably be a bit of a mess…
