Seems like the better of the two options at that time. Many Polish veterans remained in the UK after the war, refusing to return to Poland which fell under control of the Soviets. Some of them continued to visit Wojtek in the zoo, feeding him cigarettes.
True, but again, given the circumstances, Wojtek lived a great life after the war. Imagine being a bear showing up at a zoo and all you can say is that you scratched your ass on some trees in the woods, meanwhile another bear in the enclosure was a war hero.
Dude got bearussy and cigarettes set for the rest of his life. Living the dream.
