Thiago Abortion in certain tribes pre colonialism was actually pretty sacred and normal. But due to colonialism a lot of that was lost. As well as every place in the US is native land, not just what's considered a reservation. Lots of tribes wouldn't have the funds or the means to open a clinic as most don't even have access to clean water. It's also kind of ... weird to turn to natives to demand they open abortion clinics for non natives, on stolen native land, only caring when you yourself are in crisis. If tribes choose to open clinics for the public than that's great! But I think asking that of underprivileged people is a bit iffy. RvW getting overturned is absolutely evil. Edit; as well as what others have been saying, opening clinics could put the tribes in danger. More danger than they already are in day-to-day. Demanding native people open a clinic and put themself in violent harms way? Yeah no. Edit 2; changed some wording! 1 Reply Give Award Share Report 58 min. ago edited 29 min. ago Abortion in tribes pre colonialism was actually pretty sacred and normal... Please stop spreading falsehoods. Inducing miscarriages did happen and have always happened in every society, but they weren't "normal" and you'd be hard-pressed to find more than a handful of scattered examples of groups treating the intentional abortion of a female's life-giving power (which was how women were typically viewed in pre-colonial societies-as life-givers) as something "sacred." 1 The most common studies find: ...the circumstances that now provoke women to have abortions did not manifest themselves in the pre-colonial era; the cultural and economics situation of pre-colonial women was such that abortion would be useless and absurd; and reliable field work failed to disclose any significant incidence of pre-colonial abortion. Edit: As a member of the Yakama people, all these downvotes tell me is that you really don't actually care about Native voices or scholarly research and instead choose to embrace second- hand misperceptions that paint my people as mystical progressives whose ancient practices just happen to magically align with your worldview. 3 56 min. ago I have literally received information from multiple tribes on how abortions were pre colonialism from tribal members. I am not making something up, I am reiterating information directly from native people. Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow Maybe normal wasn't the right word! But it wasn't socially ostracized or judged. Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow 2 52 min. ago There is a world of difference between the facts (indigenous women were not socially stigmatized on the rare occasions when they had to induce a miscarriage) and the statement that such practices were "normal and sacred." Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow 0 43 min. ago I'm autistic and I often use the wrong words. That's my bad. I'll be trying to re find the source but I think they changed their username so it might take me a bit. 1 Save 1 Follow 41 min. ago Then you should edit your post to correct those wrong words. "Abortion is not a solution for Native women" - Navajo Times Tomorrow, hundreds of Native people from the United States and Canada will be joining hundreds of thousands of marchers in Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life. We will be marching because life is sacred from the very moment of conception. As a Native American woman, I know this to be true at a fundamental level. It has taken centuries for our Native peoples to be afforded the human rights that all people deserve by their very nature. 1 31 min. ago Ok listen I've tried to be peaceful with you but I literally do not care and I am not arguing with you. Any individual person can have an opinion about something. It is, however, a fact that historically and culturally abortion was accepted and celebrated amongst certain tribes. If a Navajo woman chooses to betray other women this way, I literally do not care. Either listen to the facts or go home. Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow Do not respond if you're going to try to argue with me. I have better things to be doing. Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow I am a Yakama. 0 1 You and that activist are full of b-------. It has never been celebrated by our people or any other that I have spoken with. Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow 25 min. ago Ok congrats ur tribe is pro birth. What do u want a cookie? Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow 0 26 min. ago 23 min. ago I'd rather have privileged white people actually listen to us rather than picking and choosing whatever version of the past makes them feel better about their own views. Our beliefs don't exist to be your therapy. 1 19 min. ago U realize that different tribes have different history right. We get it you think people w uteruses have no right to their own body. Go away now. Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow If your tribe and your people historically have never supported abortion, ok? Nobody is saying the Yakama have. I was mentioning the fact that there ARE tribes thay historically have. And due to colonialism many people have been brainwashed into pro birth propaganda. 1 Any pro birth person is f------ weird it doesn't matter what their ethnic or racial background is. Reply Give Award Share Report Save Follow 10 min. ago Your comments reek of condescending colonial privilege. You are acting like the very force you claim to oppose.
