The movie starts with Mario & Luigi's birthday. They work for Foreman Spike at a construction site. Pauline and Stanley also work at the construction site. Stanley is a main character for some reason. Luigi talks to Mario about how exciting it is to have worked another year in New Donk, but Mario feels sad and wishes there was something more. He wants to escape the city and go to a more adventurous, fantastical area. He points out a mural on a nearby building g with depicts the Mushroom Kingdom, wishing he could go to "that place in the mural." Luigi leaves Mario alone. It's nearing the end of work, and suddenly a Warp Pipe appears. Cranky and DK pop out, and seem disappointed. Mario asks what they're doing, and they say they want to escape the crowded city and go to the wide open spaces of Dry Dry Desert. They explain the Warp Zone to Mario, who decides to sneak out at the end of work to check it out. He talks to Luigi about the Warp Zone, but Luigi says they don't need some dumb Warp zone, and that their lives are perfect in New Donk. Work is ending for the day and Luigi notices that Mario is gone. He, Pauline, and Stanley leave work, despite having 3 minutes left on their clock. Spike is upset about this and chases them. They all run through the city and the sewers, before finally catching up to Mario in the Warp Zone. Coincidentally, Cranky and DK are there too. 1
