Mecha - Earthsiege - Apocalypse

Earthsiege is a bit lesser known nowadays, having spun up in the early '90s during the giant robot/mecha craze. Developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra, Earthsiege actually had its origins in Dynamix's earlier title, Mechwarrior. The game engine was a growth of the older title with various improvements to sound and textures. It featured FMV acting and digitized sound (if you had the CD version).

The plot was typical of the era, clearly based on The Terminator and mostly an excuse to blow stuff up. Gameplay was quite difficult and punishing, with the controls falling heavily into the simulation side of the house (once again, as typical of the era).

The mecha pictured here (Apocalypse HERC) was actually part of the expansion to the first game, but the design found its way into successive titles, culminating in Starsiege which was released in '99. By that point, the genre was falling out of favor and the spinoff, Tribes, had taken over the reins. Other games in the series included Missionforce: Cyberstorm, a turn-based strategy game, and the very loosely related Hunter Hunted.
